HP Slate Software
New technology has started to manifest itself in beautiful ways. Companies everyday are coming out with thinner, better looking and more powerful electronic products. Some devices that come to mind if one thinks of new age products would be 3D TVs, new laptops, PDAs, iPhones and tablet PCs. However, sometimes we get so caught up in what these devices look like, that we forget about what’s on the inside. The HP Slate PC has created quite a buzz in the tech world over the last few weeks. It belongs to what is expected to become a new family of tablet PCs, with multi-touch interfaces and great graphics with HD resolutions. The hardware on the HP Slate has been reviewed many times. For a quick recap, the HP Slate comes with an Intel Atom Core 2 Processor with a 1.6GHz speed. It supports 1024x600 pixels resolution and also has a Broadcom Crystal HD Graphics chip, that lets it showcase 1080p HD graphics. It has a 2 way camera, a USB port, a screen just under 10 inches, wifi and 3G model capabilities, and SDHC slot , an HDMI out port and a 5 hour battery life. However, it’s the software that is of interest for this article.
The HP Slate is expected to run a touch version of Windows 7, which includes native multi-touch technology that was developed in house at HP. It has been revealed that the Slate will support Adobe Flash and thus offers the full web experience, with rich HTML, XML and flash content. It is also said to be able to run Adobe AIR applications. After HP announced its acquisition of Palm, Inc. there is speculation that the HP Slate or a similar tablet device will run the Palm WebOS operating system. This has not officially been confirmed yet. Coming back to the known operating system of the HP Slate PC, we know that it runs Windows 7. Windows 7 is popular for its touch version as well, where it has already been used on tablet PCs, touchscreen desktops etc. However, Windows 7 was not originally meant to be a touchscreen operating system. When ported to an even smaller, more compact and relatively less powerful device (as compared to PCs), Windows 7 touch may fail to deliver. This is the main reason that certain people believe the HP Slate will not be very successful. Apart from that, the HP Slate seems to be in great shape, with some really cool hardware features, supported by all the latest hand held software.
To conclude, the HP Slate will probably be one of the coolest devices the market has ever seen. It will look great, both on the outside and the inside. It runs a pretty decent processor and graphics card, and has a huge beautiful display, that supports HD graphics. The only speculation is weather the Windows 7 operating system will work well on a touch device of this size. We’ll only know once it’s out on the market.
